GATE 2026 AG Exam Schedule
For the 2026 cycle, Agricultural Engineering (AG) is officially scheduled for the February 7th session. Keeping these dates in mind is critical for your revision planning.
Pattern & Question Types
The GATE AG paper consists of 65 questions (100 marks total) with a 3-hour duration. The questions fall into three categories:
• MCQ: 4 options, 1 correct. Penalty: 1/3 (1-mark) or 2/3 (2-mark).
• MSQ: One or more options can be correct. No negative marking.
• NAT: Numerical answer to be entered using a virtual keypad. No negative marking.
Marks Distribution Breakdown
Agricultural Engineering is a "Mathematics-mandatory" paper. This means your score is split between general aptitude, core math, and technical subjects.
Core Syllabus Focus Areas
The AG syllabus is vast. Focus your revision on these high-weightage subjects that traditionally dominate the paper:
1. Soil & Water Conservation (15-20%): Hydrology, Soil erosion, and Watershed management.
2. Farm Machinery & Power (12-15%): Tillage tools, I.C. Engine cycles, and Tractor chassis mechanics.
3. Irrigation & Drainage (10-12%): Evapotranspiration, Canal design, and Aquifer mechanics.
4. Agricultural Processing (8-10%): Drying kinetics, Size reduction, and Material handling.
Mathematics: The Rank Decider
Since technical subjects often have a high difficulty level, scoring well in Math (13 marks) is vital for a top rank.
• Linear Algebra: Matrices, Eigenvalues, and Eigenvectors.
• Calculus: Limits, Fourier series, and Maxima/Minima.
• Numerical Methods: Solutions of non-linear equations and Trapezoidal/Simpson's rule.
Winning Strategy for 2026
• Mastery of Virtual Calculator: Since physical calculators aren't allowed, practice with the GATE virtual calculator to save time.
• Accuracy in NATs: NAT questions have no negative marking. Attempt these carefully as they provide risk-free scoring.
• PYQ Analysis: Solve papers from 2018-2025 to understand the style of questions set by different IITs.
