GATE 2026 XE Exam Timeline
IIT Guwahati has slotted the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper for the final afternoon of the examination window. This timing is ideal for candidates who may be appearing for a primary paper on the first weekend.
Understanding the XE Paper Structure
The XE paper is unique because it allows you to choose two elective subjects during the examination. The 100 marks are distributed as follows:
• General Aptitude (Compulsory): 15 Marks.
• Section A (Engineering Mathematics): 15 Marks. Compulsory for all XE candidates.
• Any Two Elective Sections (B-H): 35 Marks each (Total 70 Marks). You choose these on the spot.
The "Pick Your Strength" Electives
Candidates must choose exactly two from the following list. Your choice defines your post-GATE admission eligibility:
*Other sections include XE-G (Food Technology) and XE-H (Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences).
Core Focus Areas for 2026
Regardless of your choice, Section A (Math) is the foundation. For your electives, focus on these critical areas:
1. Section A (Engg Math): Linear Algebra, Calculus, Differential Equations, and Numerical Methods. 15 Marks.
2. Fluid Mechanics (XE-B): Conservation laws (Mass, Momentum, Energy), Boundary layer theory, and Flow in pipes.
3. Solid Mechanics (XE-D): Stress-strain relationships, Mohr’s Circle, Torsion of shafts, and Euler’s column theory.
4. Thermodynamics (XE-E): First and Second Laws, Entropy, Properties of Pure Substances, and Thermodynamic Cycles.
Success Roadmap for XE 2026
1. The 30-Mark Buffer: Since GA (15) and Section A Math (15) are compulsory, aim for 25+ here. This is the most consistent part of the XE paper.
2. Select Electives Early: Do not wait until the exam day. Solve previous year papers for B, C, D, and E to see which two yield the highest score for you.
3. Focus on Fundamentals: XE elective papers are often more conceptually deep but mathematically less tedious than the core ME/CE papers. Focus on "Why" rather than just "How."
4. PYQ Drills (2014-2025): Concepts in Solid Mechanics and Thermodynamics are highly repetitive. Solve 12 years of XE papers to master the difficulty level.
