GATE 2026 MN Exam Timeline
IIT Guwahati has scheduled the Mining Engineering (MN) paper for the second Sunday of the examination window. With CIL often using these scores for recruitment, your preparation timeline is critical.
Paper Structure & Marking Scheme
The MN paper consists of 65 questions totaling 100 marks. The exam evaluates your field-level decision-making through complex numericals and safety regulations.
• MCQ (Multiple Choice): 1 or 2 marks with 1/3 or 2/3 negative marking.
• MSQ (Multiple Select): One or more options can be correct. No negative marking. Ideal for testing CMR (Coal Mines Regulations) and Safety Laws.
• NAT (Numerical Answer): Precise calculation required. No negative marking. Heavily used in Rock Mechanics and Ventilation.
Major Marks Distribution
Mining Engineering is a subject of "Technical Pillars." For 2026, focus on these three core areas that consistently provide 45-50% of the marks.
Core Syllabus: High Yield Areas
To target an AIR under 100, you must master these core technical pillars:
1. Rock Mechanics (12-14 Marks): Rock mass classification (RMR, Q-system), Stress-strain analysis, and Underground support design.
2. Mine Ventilation (10-12 Marks): Natural & Mechanical ventilation, Fan laws, Atkinson's Equation, and Mine gases.
3. Mine Surveying (8-10 Marks): Traversing, Levelling, Errors adjustment, and Photogrammetry.
4. Surface & Underground Methods: Dragline/Shovel-Dumper systems, Longwall mining, and Board and Pillar methods.
Math & Geostatistics
Math is the "rank-decider." Apart from the 13 marks of Engineering Mathematics, Mining students must focus on Geostatistics (Kriging, Variograms) which appears in the core section.
• Linear Algebra: Matrices and Eigenvalues.
• Calculus: Taylor series and Multiple Integrals.
• Numerical Methods: Solving non-linear equations for ventilation networks.
Success Strategy for 2026
1. Master the 28 Non-Technical Marks: Aptitude and Math are standard. Securing 25+ here is essential for getting a CIL call.
2. Practice NAT Questions: Nearly 30% of the paper consists of NATs. Practice with the virtual calculator daily for Rock Mechanics and Surveying numericals.
3. Focus on CMR 2017: Coal Mines Regulations and Safety laws are frequently tested via MSQs. Ensure you stay updated on statutory limits.
4. PYQ Drills (2012-2025): Mining patterns are repetitive. Solve at least 13 years of papers to understand IIT Guwahati's question-setting style.
