GATE 2026 Sociology Exam Timeline
For the 2026 session, Sociology (XH-C6) is scheduled for the first Saturday. As a specialized paper under the Humanities (XH) umbrella, it requires early conceptual grounding.
Understanding the XH Paper Structure
The XH-C6 paper is divided into three parts. You must clear the aggregate score to be eligible for IIT admissions and fellowships.
• Part 1: General Aptitude (Compulsory): 15 Marks. Tests numerical and verbal logic.
• Part 2: Reasoning & Comprehension (XH-B1): 25 Marks. Compulsory for all XH candidates. Focuses on critical reading and inference.
• Part 3: Sociology (XH-C6): 60 Marks. The core subject section containing 40 technical questions.
Core Syllabus: The Sociological Pillars
To target an AIR under 100, you must master the classical theories and their application to the Indian context.
1. Sociological Theory: Structural-Functionalism (Parsons, Merton), Conflict Theory (Marx, Dahrendorf), and Interpretive Sociology (Weber, Mead).
2. Research Methodology: Positivism vs Interpretivism, Qualitative methods (Ethnography, Case studies), and Quantitative methods (Sampling, Statistics).
3. Social Stratification: Concepts of Class, Status, and Power. Dynamics of Caste in India and global perspectives on Gender and Ethnicity.
4. Indian Society: Village studies, Agrarian social structure, Caste-Class nexus, and Social movements (Dalit, Peasant, Environmental).
Modern & Applied Sociology
GATE often tests your understanding of globalization and its impact on traditional structures:
• Globalization: Impact on labor, migration, and the "Global Village" concept.
• Development: Modernization theory, Dependency theory, and Sustainable development.
• Family & Kinship: Changing patterns of marriage and family in the 21st century.
Success Roadmap for 2026
1. Prioritize Section B1 (Comprehension): These 25 marks are the "rank boosters." Practice passages that deal with sociological and philosophical abstract themes.
2. Theory to Context: Don't just learn Marx or Weber; learn how their theories are used to analyze modern Indian social phenomena like urbanization.
3. The MSQ Strategy: Multiple Select Questions are common in Indian Society sections. Since there's no negative marking, double-check all possible social variables in the options.
4. PYQ Drills (2021-2025): Sociology is a newer paper in GATE. Solve all previous papers to understand how IIT professors frame analytical questions differently from the UGC-NET style.
