Introduction to Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals and OCI/PIO Candidates who have Secured OCI/PIO Card Before 04.03.2021

JEE Advanced is one of the most competitive exams in India, serving as the gateway to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The eligibility criteria for this exam are stringent and vary based on the candidate's nationality and other factors. This blog focuses on the eligibility criteria for Indian nationals and OCI/PIO candidates who secured their OCI/PIO cards before 04.03.2021, providing a detailed breakdown of each criterion.

Criterion 1: Performance in JEE (Main) 2024

To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2024, candidates must rank among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE (Main) 2024. The distribution of these candidates across various categories is as follows:

Within each of these categories, a 5% horizontal reservation is provided for PwD candidates. The selection of the top 2,50,000 candidates is based on their performance in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE (Main) 2024.

Note: The total number of candidates may slightly exceed 2,50,000 due to tied ranks/scores in any category.

OCI/PIO cardholders who secured their OCI/PIO cards before 04.03.2021 are considered Indian nationals for the purpose of seat allocation to IITs. However, these candidates are not eligible for any kind of reservation benefits (e.g., GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) except for OPEN-PwD. Such candidates must be in the rank list for the OPEN or OPEN-PwD categories.

Criterion 2: Age Limit

Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1999, to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2024. A relaxation of five years is provided for SC, ST, and PwD candidates, meaning these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1994.

Criterion 3: Number of Attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

Criterion 4: Appearance in Class XII (or Equivalent) Examination

To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2024, candidates must have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2023 or 2024, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

Candidates who appeared in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2022 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2024, regardless of the subjects attempted.

Note: If the examination board declared the results for the academic year 2021-22 on or after September 21, 2022, candidates from that board who appeared in 2022 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2024, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria.

Criterion 5: Earlier Admission at IITs

Candidates who have been admitted to an IIT through JoSAA 2023, regardless of whether they continued in the program, or accepted an IIT seat by reporting “online” or at a “reporting centre” in the past, are NOT eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2024. This includes candidates whose admission was cancelled for any reason after joining an IIT.

However, candidates who were admitted to a preparatory course in any of the IITs for the first time in 2023 can appear in JEE Advanced 2024. Additionally, candidates who were allocated a seat in an IIT through JoSAA 2023 but did not report, withdrew before the last round of seat allotment, or had their seat cancelled before the last round, are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2024, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria.
