CBSE's press release of June 29, 2026 makes three languages compulsory for students entering Class IX in 2026-27, of which at least two must be Bhartiya Bhashas. The third language, R3, will be assessed internally by the school, and this batch will not face a CBSE board examination in R3 in Class X.

CBSE issued Circular Acad-46/2026 in July 2026 titled "R3 Language Assessment Framework and Learning Resources for Class IX", giving schools the assessment framework and learning material for the newly introduced third language. Circular Acad-33/2026 of May 2026 aligns Class IX and X language study with the NCERT syllabus.

The CBSE curriculum for Classes IX to XII for 2026-27 was released on April 1-2, 2026 through Circular Acad-14/2026, and Class 9 moves to new NCF-SE 2023 aligned NCERT textbooks this session. Subject-wise Class IX syllabus PDFs are available on cbseacademic.nic.in.

NCERT has released almost all revised textbooks up to Class 9, but Class 9 Mathematics and Social Science Part 2 are still awaited. NCERT says these will be published in August 2026, before they are needed for second-semester teaching. New Class 10 and 11 books follow only from 2027-28.

Class 9 is a school-level annual assessment, not a board exam, but it feeds directly into CBSE's approved twice-a-year Class 10 scheme: the first board attempt is compulsory, the second is optional for score improvement, the better subject-wise score is retained, and internal assessment is conducted only once.
